Temple Square Mutual Activity

I need your input...and yes, this means YOU! I made mention at a mutual planning committee about skipping out on Temple Square this December. I didn't realize that the youth LOVE this activity. They freaked when I mentioned that maybe we should do something else. As Leaders, we feel that the youth get nothing out of this acitivy. We get to Salt Lake, walk around the temple grounds, and the youth are hyper as ever and then it is time to go back to the car and head home. So, as Leaders we told the youth that we could go to Temple Square as long as we can do something else besides walking around. We feel that it needs to be a little more on the spiritual side, and something that will be more meaningful to everyone. So, my question to you is...is there any ideas that you have out there that we could use?? Maybe something you did as a youth at Temple Square than the usual walking around???

Do a service project associted with the trip. Go to Temple Square--early enough of course. Then about 7:30-8:00 take a secret Santa, or take food to the Homeless Shelter, or the Indian Walk In shelter. That will get those kids thinking about life!

My first thought is that it's probably OK to have one just for fun activity once a year at Christmas time. Especially if it's a tradition in your ward and they love it. Other than that, can you go when there is a concert going on at the Tabernacle? That might make it seem more worthwhile.

I know that there were a lot of kids in my ward growing up that the only times they EVER got to go to Temple Square was when they went with their mutual group. So I think it's great. Make sure you go watch the nativity scene they have set up and listen to the story. I don't think there's a better way to remind the youth of what the season is really about than going to Temple Square. And there is always a concert going on in either the Tabernacle or one of the other buildings, and it's always spiritually centered.

Maybe you could go and watch the Joseph Smith movie before. I know after that movie I am always on a spiritual high so I am mellow (and you know how hyper I can get)!

For a family reunion one year we went to Temple Square and did our own "Amazing Race" Where we had to do spiritual tasks at the different buildings. It would be a lot of work, but it was really fun, and they could feel the spirit by completing different tasks set up for them.

You MUST go to Temple Square! That was one of my favorite activities growing up. Not sure what else you could do besides walking around though. One of the things we always did was walk up the the big Christus. Loved it.
